Morning commute in NYC
LONG TRIP BACK TO NYC
I arrived back in NYC after spending a much needed week with the family. Quite a trip back though…
I arrive at the airport @ terminal 2 which is specified on my flight information. I fly out of Northwest Airlines which is nowhere to be found. I ask an airport employee which kindly tells me that Northwest is located in terminal 1. That’s fine. I’m with my grandpa, uncle Billy and my mom. We slowly make our way over to Terminal 1. I find Northwest and proceed to check in. They do not let me check in and direct me to Terminal 2 because apparently I am flying out on a Delta partnered flight, so it’s necessary for me to check in with Delta, though Delta is mentioned nowhere in my flight information. Me, my mom, uncle Billy & grandpa slowly make our way back to terminal 2. At this point, it’s a bit more walking than my grandpa is used to so he has gotten a wheelchair that my uncle Billy pushes while my mom & I treck ahead. I attempt the check-in kiosk which then tells me there is an error & directs me to a person at the counter. I stand in line. Finally when it is my turn. The nice lady behind the counter tells me my flight is cancelled due to "mechanical". Doesn’t seem to be my lucky day, but trying to stay positive, I guess I’d rather be cancelled than fly on a "mechanically" flawed plane. Luckily I re-book a flight leaving at the same time. The lay over is an additional hour, but no worries. I was going to ride the bus back being that I was arriving @ 9, but since I’d be arriving @ 11pm I figured the worst part about it would be that I’m forking over the 50 bucks for the cab.
I say my goodbye’s and proceed towards security where I get flagged. They give me a red bin instead of the black bin. As I pile my stuff in my red little bin, one of the airport employees say "Oh, you don’t want to use the red bin," thinking I’ve grabbed the wrong color in error, "that means they’ll go through every bit of your things." Another employee tells him "Nope, she was flagged." "Ohhhh….ok…" The employee says nodding his head probably thinking the same thing I am. Again, looking on the bright side….I’m all for people digging through everybodies things….especially everyone on my plane…so search away! Rather the security be to tough than to lax right?
I get on the plane with no apparent hiccups, and they make the announcements after an hour of flight that we are approximately 45 minutes from Dallas/Ft Worth. (my connection) 10 minutes later, they announce that Dallas/Ft Worth is closed for an hour due to weather conditions, our little jet does not have enough fuel to hang out in the sky so we’re making a detour to Wichita, TX. We land and wait to refuel…we’re 5th in line. somehow, a half hour later, according to the announcement, we are 6th in line (somehow we got bumped back one) and 1 of the 2 fuel vehicles re-fueling the plane has broke down. An hour and a half later, we are ready to take off. So our little 2 hour flight morphed into a 5 hour flight/park. Coincidentally before take off, the gentleman sitting next to me had observed that there seemed to be an abnormal amount of small children on this flight. 5 hours later these small children have all now joined in a chorus of one loud constant cry/scream bubble. This same gentleman observed while waiting for the seatbelt sign to go off that he now understood why lions eat their young.
Of course I miss my connecting and it’s late so the earliest flight out is the next day. Originally they were not going to pay for the hotel if weather is the cause but I kindly told the nice lady behind the counter that had they not cancelled my original flight due to "mechanical" I would have been flying to bright and sunny Minneanapolis instead of Dallas/Ft Worth. Then she told me that Delta would not pay for a hotel because I flew through Northwest. I then told the nice lady that it was indeed a Delta flight that cancelled on me. She looked into it and proceeded to arrange the hotel. She told me a white van with "Clarion Hotel" on it. I walk out the exit nearest me and wait…wait….&….wait. No van. Hot, muggy, and no van. I go back to the counter….tell the nice lady there is no van. The nice lady seems baffled, and I venture to guess that maybe I was not in the correct spot for the Clarion van to pick me up. "Oh! You need to go to the lower level. Did I forget to tell you that??" I wearily smile at the nice lady and say "no, but that’s ok" when really I’m thinking "I need a drink" which is exactly what I did once I got to the lovely Clarion Hotel. Several in fact.
All in all everything worked out for the best. Honestly, it realistically turned into an extended vacation day and on the flight the next morning, I sat next to a man born & raised in NYC, currently living in Dallas going back home to see the Mets play. (a season ticket holder) Like I’ve said before, the best part of NYC is the people and sitting next to this guy on my flight back was like getting into a great conversation with a complete stranger on the subway going home, and even though it was one huge task to get back home, I felt like I was home on this particular flight.
I had a great stay in Ely. My parents just re-did the carpet and walls in my home town home, my sister who was terrified about her final test to become a social worker has now passed it just like I told her she would and I am SO SO proud of everything she has accomplished all while raising 2 beautiful perfect little girls. My brother just got out of the Marine corp after serving in Iraq in Fallujah during the most turbulent of times, traveling to Kuwait, Singapore, Hawaii and countless other places.
So I’m back in NYC and everything’s as it should be. Currently in the process of moving a new roommate in on September 3rd. She is very cool and I do think she will mesh well with our humble abode. I will keep you posted on all of the new developments / raised terror alerts. 🙂

SNOW DAY!
I’ve gone from hurricanes in Florida to blizzards in NYC. Both of which I can claim are a hell of a lotta fun to play in!
I think the anticipation was the most exciting part of it though. Everyone sat in their apartments cozy and warm watching the sky gradually change from bright & sunny to a looming grey layer of clouds. After that, the view from the window was pretty much white. That continued throughout the night for the next 24 hours. Mark (a born & raised Florida boy) was like a little boy in the candy shop for the very first time. 24 hours before the storm I had consistent minute by minute update on NYC weather conditions. (Generally the update was “It’s gonna snow..a lot”) But regardless I was grateful for the reliable updates. The next morning I had to be to work at 9 am so Mark decided to accompany me on my trek to work. He says he wanted to make sure I got there safely, I knew he just wanted to play in the snow. J
The snow was past our knees & at this point in the morning, no one had shoveled their sidewalks yet. It was abnormally quiet & empty outside. The thing about NYC is that there is ALWAYS people wherever you go. This particular morning reminded me of those movies where there was some huge catastrophe & the next morning when the few survivors emerge, the streets are empty and eerily quiet. It felt like that. J Anyway, we dug our way over to the subway stations, & then to work. Now over in the West Village, the streets are very narrow. Just enough room for one lane of traffic lined with a row of buildings all connected. Since the snow had nowhere to go, it just seems to fill up these tiny little roads. By the time I arrived at work, I (dressed completely in black) showed up to work completely white. Mark went on to play in the snow all day long, then hang out at our favorite bar “Jimmy’s Corner”. Mark even shoveled Jimmy’s sidewalk in front of the bar for him which resulted in a couple of shots on the house. After work I met him @ Jimmy’s and had a fun evening playing in the snow. All in all, it was a great snow day.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
TIME WARP TO ELY, NEVADA
First of all, Ely is one big giant TIME WARP.
Nothing changes! That’s part of the beauty of the place. Sometimes people retrospectively wish they could time warp back to their childhood, I literally can. Just a plane ride away!
Vacations are supposed to be stress free, but this was not the case. Though I’m not complaining because the stress was due to chaotic schedule required to see every single person that I wanted to see. Right when I got back, I had to recitals back-to-back that starred one of my favorite little people, my niece. The first was a gymnastic recital, and the second was a dance recital. I haven’t seen my niece in over a year, and just as she was lining up with the rest of the girls to perform, she spotted me for the first time. Her eyes got big and I waved whispering "I love you!" and my sister pushed down my hand for fear she would run off the stage and give me a big hug which I truthfully would have been all for. I had a great time hanging out with my family & I CANNOT BELIEVE how big my younger niece has gotten but she is DAMN cute! J
The great thing about this visit was that all of my friends that I was able to visit are at a really great place in their lives right now. I was able to see my friend Donavan which I was grateful for being that by the time I was able to see him, he would be leaving for Ecuador in less than 24 hours. I got to see Tricia in at her new job, which she loves. I was able to see Amber who is probably experiencing one of the most happy and exciting times in her life next to the birth of her perfect son. I hung out with Chris who has made some very positive and responsible life choices and is a better person for it. I’m proud of him. I also was able to have a nice long conversation with my uncle Kenny & my cousin Lisa on why we don’t frequent the local McDonalds. The only regret I have is I wish I’d had more time to spend with my grandparents. I rode back up to Vegas with my mom and my uncle Billy where we were entertained by Bernard Goldberg’s "100 People Who Are Screwing Up America". Though we differ politically as Franken is to O’reilly, I must admit, I did agree with a few of those choices on the list, ie: Rick & Kathy Hilton for succeeding in raising the most superficial child on the planet. Courtney Love (no explanation needed) & Michael Jackson (also no explanation needed) My uncle Billy is probably one of my most favorite people to politically spar with. It’s fun & never gets heated.
I arrived back in New York City a day into this stupid transit strike. I waited at the airport forever because there is a new policy that no one with less than 4 people can cross the bridge into Manhattan. My roommate Mikki pretty much summed up my feelings about th e situation on her website if you want to check it out.

This morning I woke up at 4am to catch a ride downtown with one of my co-workers. I am writing this at 10am and I am not scheduled to be into work until 2pm. I will be here from 5:30am until 9pm and am still not quite sure how I am planning on getting home. Nice first day back eh? So this strike is hurting everyone, including the transit workers. This will be their 3rd day without pay not to mention all of the fines they are building up. They say they are fighting for the common worker, but what they can’t seem to grasp is the people who CANNOT afford to fork over $30 for a cab are the ones that now can’t get to work & make a living. So that’s my opinion. I’ll be getting up the pictures from my visit to Ely as soon as I can so definitely check back!
I miss & love all of you in Nevada and it was so great to see everyone!
I also send many prayers and love to you Grandpa Schoofs along with the rest of the family in the west!

Getting evicted in New York City…
So you’d think that moving to NYC and surviving is enough excitement to keep you going for awhile what I say to that is
FOOEY!
I’d much rather move to NYC and 3 months into the process come home from a long nights work to eviction papers. Turns out you can still get served eviction papers even though you pay your rent in full and on time each month. In order to pull this off, what you need to do is sublet from a woman that has complete disregard for anyone else but herself who once she receives the rent money, blows it on something other than the purpose the money was originally intended for. But I’m not bitter, cause had it not been for her complete selfishness & irresponsibilty, we wouldn’t have found this lovely gem of an apartment that I am telling you about today. So I’d like to say THANKYOU! Anyway, long story short, we went to court, they granted us two months rent free to find a new place to live. So initially I was kinda proud of myself for moving to NYC by myself and making it on my own, now I’ve really impressed myself for doing it twice, and BETTER.
So I’m movin to Harlem!!!
Mikki & I are at the realtors office in Brooklyn going over the lease & all of the paperwork, most of it telling you what you can’t do, but I think the most important information I walked away with that day was that…."children can’t fly". I swear! They really can’t! And just in case you didn’t take them seriously, they accompanied the bold statement with a lovely illustration….and it should be noted that on the back was translated in chinese, along with a lovely illustration….appropriately of a chinese baby.
We were laughing so hard we were bawling and I’m sure the realtor was second guessing giving us the keys, especially when we deemed it appropriate to switch pens in between each signature……it was just necessary….I can’t explain why. 🙂
I’ve included a link to Mikki’s website where she’s included some additional pictures of the apartment and she sums it much better than I could even try.

Now I know a bunch of you are thinking….Harlem….Hmmm.
The fact of the matter is that we are really living in a great community and Harlem has really turned a corner especially after 9/11. More and more people are flooding into the area because it’s not as expensive as Manhattan, but SO much more convenient than Brooklyn or other places. So it’s all good. As one lifetime Harlem resident so eloquently put it, "if you’re walking down the street and you get shot, it’s because you were into somethin, not just ’cause you were walkin down the street."
Plus, before anyone starts passing judgement, the so-called "luxury building" that upscale people like Katie Holmes apartment is located, lives a resident that throws dung out the window. Literal poo. I know, I was there when they called the NYPD to file a complaint. Just so you know, you’ll be exposed to that level of class no matter how much money you pay for rent.
So now you will walk away with two gems of information from reading this today…Even rich people aren’t above throwing poo & babies can’t fly.
