Morning commute in NYC
So this is the first time I’m updating this site in almost a year, but I couldn’t pass writing about my story yesterday morning…
So I now have a job where I wake up at the butt-crack of dawn (2am) to go to work. I walk 5 blocks through Harlem at 3am to go to the subway which is fine. I’ve been working this shift since December ’06 and have yet to encounter a problem. So as the train pulls up in the station, I walk into the one subway car that is practically empty. My gut told me there was a reason this car was empty (yes, even at 3am the cars consist of at least 4-5 people at any given hour. This car had one man at the end of the car smoking crack right on the train. It was pretty pungent, so I switched cars at the next stop. There were more people on this car, including a homeless woman sprawled across the seat in front of me, but there was no stench so I took my seat and tried to relax. 2 stops later, the doors open and an NYPD officer pops his head in and taps the homeless woman with his stick and tells her to sit up. The obviously annoyed woman (half awake or sober) starts throwing her stuff around and rearranging herself all over the place. She then proceeds to drop her pants and take a piss on the train directly next to me. I immediately grab my bag from the floor and hoist my feet onto the seat just escaping the stream of piss that is now coasting down the length of the subway car. I hopped over the pee-stream and made my way to the opposite end of the subway car. At the next stop, I switched cars again, but this time I was able to ride peacefully to my final desination. Some funny observations though, I was the only one to switch cars on the next stop. After several stops though, everyone was forced to move to another car so they could clean it up, but this just goes to show New Yorkers truly have seen it all. Not even a ranting homeless woman taking a piss in front of you can shock these people enough for them to look up from their morning newpaper. 🙂 I love New York.
