Subway Entertainers
Every day on the commute to or from work it’s always a different experience. Tonight for instance…I manage to secure myself a seat on the long (well it seems long after a 10 hour day) ride home. A man enters into our subway car from the previous car (you always know something is ahead when people switch cars while the train is in motion.)
The man starts hollerin out "PLEASE! PLEASE! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME THEIR SEAT?! I HAVE DIARREA! PLEASE?! I DRANK MILK!… I KNOW I SHOULDN’T DRINK MILK BUT I DID IT ANYWAY, C’MON! I’LL GIVE SOMEONE 5 DOLLA’S FOR A SEAT!" He’s carrying a speaker & guitar case. "PLEASE SOMEBODY, ANYBODY?!" As the man starts to sit on the speaker he’s totin around, "IT’S COMIN, I KNEW I SHOULDN’T HAVE DRANK THAT MILK!" People quickly scurry away from the potential nastiness about to occur, while the people a safe distance away sitting comfortably in their seats (me included) laugh & shake their heads. We reach another stop, people step off, more people step on.
The man standing on his stage successfully cleared by his clever plan introduces himself. "Hello ladies & gentlemen…My name is … & if you can name the artist from this next song, the lady with the dreads (who had secured her seat next to me) gets a kiss on the lips. He plays his song which wasn’t half bad….& to the ladies despair…some guy a safe distance away guessed the artist, and as my stop approached, the man closed in on the woman, everyone laughing & having a much more entertaining experience then anyone else stuck in gridlock traffic anywhere else in the world. Experiences like this is exactly why NYC is the greatest city in the world… I see celebrities every single day at work, but these are the experiences that stick with me. These people are truly what makes this city so great.
